We hope that over the next two weeks, students will take time to relax and spend time with their families. If you are looking for any homework activities, students can work on the following to help them to be ready to learn when we come back to school in January.
Reading:
Students should continue to read daily over the break and talk about what they have read. Talking about the elements of the story and talking about the main idea will be helpful.
Writing:
Students will be continuing to work on letter writing with a focus on constructing detailed paragraphs and editing their work. We will be working with the "Hamburger Model" to develop paragraph writing to ensure that students are using a topic sentence, detail sentences and a closing sentence. A simple sample can be found here:

Students could work on writing letters, aiming to include 3 paragraphs that follow that model. Perhaps a thank you note for a gift they received?
Math:
We will wrap up 2D shapes in the new year and move on to data management. To prepare, students could practice conducting a simple survey on a question of their choice with their family members and friends. They could then plot their data using a bar graph. Students should focus on the correct labeling of a graph (title, labels on x and y axis, scale).
Science:
We will continue to work on the parts and functions of plants after the break. A good activity would be to have your child plant a small indoor plant, care for it and observe/record the changes it undergoes.
Social Studies:
We will continue to discuss Canada's Pioneers after the break. The following is a great website that they can begin to read for information on these people:
http://www.projects.yrdsb.edu.on.ca/pioneer/
Have a safe and wonderful holiday! We will welcome our students back on January 5, 2015.
